Window wood frame has white spots after staining

I just finished sanding my window wood frame and after staining a lot of white spots showed up in certain areas. Can't understand what happened.

I cleaned the frames with mineral spirits before staining. It didn't happen on all of them

Did you sand them any first?

My guess is that the white areas are where you didn't sand all the way through the old varnish, and it didn't accept the stain because the wood is still sealed with the old varnish.

But what kind of thinner did you use? I hope it wasn't the low VOC kind.

That's possible, keep in mind that I am far from being a professional. This is the first time I attempted something like that. I didn't use any thinner, I cleaned with mineral spirits before staining.
