Wood window trim repair and paint

We are in the process of remodeling our family room.
I decided to paint our wood trim white. Of course, I didn't read up on it before I started and I went right to painting. But I noticed some not so smooth areas and decided to try caulking. Didn't work! So while removing the caulk the wood was scratched, gauged, cut, shaved, you name it!!!

Now I am stuck with pealing, uneven mess with wood that is shaving off. What is the best way to repair this????

Was this woodwork previously painted or stained/poly'd? where you caulking cracks or some type of damage?

Spackle and joint compound can work but there are wood fillers designed for this as well.

Deck Railing Peeling How To Repair

Cedar deck railing – 27 years old – painted 3 times since it was installed with Cabot Solid Acrylic Deck Stain. The top surface of the 2 X 4’s, above and below the balusters, have areas where the paint has lifted and can be peeled off to the bare wood. What is the proper way of preparing the bare areas and then repainting the entire railing. Should I use a stain or paint as a finish? Thanks for your help. I have a 2 story house with a brown roof. I am redoing the exteriors and painting. For the first west wall I did a basic brown with green trim around 4 windows. From a distance I can see that any more brown and it will look like a big chocolate box. The north and east sides are the most visible from the road. What other colors might work with the brown roof(not red) and be a nice counterpoint to the brown.??. The west side will remain brown also. I was thinking a blue grey or a 2 tone set up,lower and upper floor.
