Can I use epoxy paint over unfinished wood?

Hi, I used epoxy paint over my concrete basement floor, along with a clear topcoat and it turned out good, very happy with it.

I was wondering if I could use the same type of epoxy paint for unfinished wood, specifically, the stairwell that leads to my basement, since it will experience quite a bit of foot traffic, will it be better than regular latex acrylic, or is there a better suggestion (other than staining it)?

Thanks in advance!

The epoxy works but the issue of a hard glossy surface presents slipping hazards on a stairway.

Any hard wearing finish will have a tendency to be slick. Other possible products would include a waterborne alkyd which gives you a durable finish but again, the harder and glossier the surface, the more slick it will be. You can add an aggregate to help make it less hazardous or glue on a non slip strip to the surface near the stair nosing. Above all, please make sure you have an appropriate handrail.

Epoxy can be applied to wood but you need to use the appropriate primer first. The slickness of the epoxy finish can't be overstated! Adding grit to the paint helps but tends to wear off in the high traffic areas. Solvent based or waterborne coatings will wear better than latex coatings.

What type of wood is it? what condition?

It's just bare, unfinished wood on a stairwell. Thanks.

The bare wood will need to be primed first. Many epoxies require a latex primer so read the label and prime accordingly.
