Baby gate dilema and now holes in the walls
I'm not sure what my husband and I were thinking when we installed the baby gate at the foot if the stairs like this. The gate only opens 80% of the way because it hits the banister.
Even though we used "bat wing" anchors, it keeps coming loose from the wall. As it did an inch away in it's previous installation.
Any suggestions on how to position and hang this gate?
Also, how do I touch up all these holes? They're so big that it's obvious my husband and I are idoits!

Is it feasible to move the gate so it can be anchored to a stud behind the drywall?
btw - don't beat yourself up so much, idiots are those that never learn from their mistakes ..... and all of us here have made plenty along the way

I have trouble posting pics sometimes too
It might be possible that your pics are too big and need to be resized before you are able to post them. Another option is to post them on a site like photobucket and then provide the link.

The 1x4 should cover the existing hole. I'd use toggle bolts along with adhesive to mount the 1x4 to wall. The hole for the toggle bolt should just be big enough to push the folded up nut thru. If you prefinish the front and sides of the 1x4 before installation it will be easier on you.

Do what marksr said, After kids get bigger and no longer need gate holes are easy to fix. Post again and we will tell you how.

Don't use glue, you will regret it more than the holes in the walls later on.
This is for safety at this point not necessarily aesthetics. I would take the left side of the gate and swing the attachment point out so that you can capture the hand railing and secure it to that with some string or wire. You may be even able to share one of the screws that hole the railing into the studs for added support. On the newel post side, also secure the wood to the newel with string/rope or large Zip ties. No holes are needed and you have a secure gate.
