i want to repaint the walls in my house with a latex paint. right now the walls have an oil based paint on them. what do i need to do the the walls so the the new paint will adhere properly to the walls?

If the oil paint is fully cured, you can follow standard procedures without a problem. If it's glossy, de-gloss it (via sanding, Paso, strong TSP). If it's flat and FULLY CURED, clean it and go for it. If it's months old instead of years, prime it with an alkyd (oil) primer that will take a latex top-coat.
