I would like to paint over the ceiling tiles in my house, they are about 10 inches wide and 24 inches long. I believe they are made out of a fiber paper of some sort, they are old and need some assistance. I think they were installed in the mid 50's. Please help me.

Assuming that they've not been painted, you may have a tough row here. Problem is dirt impregnated into/onto the existing finish. You could try priming and painting, keep it all latex. Don't think you could successfully "scrub" this stuff clean without it falling apart and that's the first step for old surfaces. If the primer seems to stick you may be in good shape. If the primer doesn't stick, there's no sense in painting on top of it.

My rec for latex is that I'm not sure how the adhesives in the tiling material would hold up to the solvents in alkyd products, perhaps another pro has a more lucid input. Stand by, the experiences and opinions abound on this board.

my best
