best weathered / barnwood gray stain

Hi, looking for opinions on the best available stain to achieve a weathered GRAY - barnwood type look.

Semi-transparent over pine.

oil OR water based ... just want the best finish available.

I've used a 'bleaching' stain in the past the makes siding look weathered, haven't used any in decades so I don't know if it's still available. Otherwise there are various grey stains that will get the color right, just not the variance.

Thanks marksr. I have my eye on the readily available varathane weathered gray (now rustoleum) and it looks like there are pretty good results using it. I have also experimented with the recent chic favorite of using black tea, vinegar and steel wool but my test, even with varying degress of "aging" the vinegar/steel wool (iron acetate) mixture it turns out more red than gray.

Unless someone else has a must use idea I'll likely give the varathane product a go.

These are on interior stair treads so longevity is a concern even though I know that is going to be an issue on something with no protectant or sealer (slip concerns). Maybe I need some sage advice there too!

I just assumed it was exterior wood

You really need to coat the treads with 2-3 coats of poly once you get the stain to your liking! Using a satin poly may help preserve more of the look you are going for. Without a poly/varnish protective coating the stain will wear away, sooner if not later. Stairs should always have handrails which it the main thing to prevent falls.

I'll keep in mind that.
