Painting vinyl wall board.
This is for Marksr and other painting experts.
A customer of mine asked what would be the proper way to prepare a wall for paint that was originally a vinyl coated 4 x 8 sheet (not wallpaper but similar). I think these were popular years back. She tells me the wall surfaces are in very good shape but she does not like the color. She thinks the surface behind the panels is in bad shape and she does not want to remove the panels for fear of major work. She also thinks these panels are at least 40 to 50 years old.
I suggested Kilz bonding primer as a first agent then any color of her choice. I also told her I would check with the experts before she buys. Any comments?

I've only used Kilz original and lean toward Zinsser primers. That said, I agree with your assessment that getting a good surface for the paint is going to be important. Quality latex paint on top, of course.

That sounds a lot like the drywall used in mobile homes. It's best to coat it with a solvent based primer first. A pigmented shellac would be my first choice but most any interior oil base primer should do fine. Top coat with your choice of latex paint [any sheen] Tinting the primer may help with coverage.

Zinnser primers [BIN, oil base Bullseye and Cover Stain] are always good although most any interior oil base primer should be ok including original Kilz. A lot depends on what store you go to and what they have available.
I assume the bottom edge is easiest to do with a small roller with a pole?
