Question Shading down from darker to lighter color

I am trying to paint my 3 year old son's room using a picture from Disney Home to get a "Buzz Lightyear" room.
The description says that they used the darker blue
"shaded down to" the lighter blue, but there is no
explanation of how this was done. We have tried to paint the two colors and then blend in the middle, but it is not working. I am using a semi-gloss paint. Please see picture at this link http://disney.go.com/disneyhome/design/buzz.html

and HELP!!!

Thanks in advance very much!!

Smile Painting

Have you try doing it with a sponge? You need to put down the light blue first at bottom and then the dark blue on top and in the middle you use a big sponge and carry the dark blue down onto the light blue. Do not use a lot of paint. What works good is two people, one use roller by the area and the second person right behind with sponge and carry paint over lighter blue. Meaning place sponge on wet paint and then dab on down the wall over lapping the light blue paint.
