Rustoleum spray paint on outside shed door?

I have an outdoor shed. The outside is vinyl and the door is wood. The door has been repainted once (since delivery in 2000) and that was 5 or 6 years ago. I'm not sure what kind of paint was used to repaint it (someone else did it) or what paint was originally used. The door is starting to show some wear...paint peeling and chipping, mostly on the crossbar, exposing the wood.

Would Rustoleum spray paint help keep that area from deteriorating? Prep work?

If not that, what would be a good fix for this...from beginning to end? I'm really, seriously, honestly a novice in this area. I'm not concerned so much with how it looks as protecting it.

I haven't stabbed at it (didn't think of that until just now) so don't know the extent of the wear where the paint is gone.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums Linda!
Whatever paint you go with it would be better to brush or roll it on. Paint in aerosol cans has to be drastically thinned in order to atomize which makes it difficult to get enough paint mil thickness to provide lasting protection. Is My Paint Latex Or Oil?
