If painted over rather than tiled over, will redgard waterproof a wall?

I doubt the paint would hold up long term. Paint isn't near as durable as tile and might hinder tile application later.

Just to clarify, this isn't a tiled area. It's the area around my shower head that does get wet, but doesn't really show signs of water damage. Am I better off just standard high gloss paint there or should I RG and then paint it?

Generally a coat or two of latex enamel is sufficient. A bath paint is even better as it has extra mildewcide. Do you have an exhaust fan?

Thanks marksr. Yes we have a good exhaust vent with great air flow.

I forgot to add it doesn't have to be a high gloss latex enamel, any sheen will do - just needs to be an enamel, not flat paint.

Would that include Behr Premius Plus Ultra? Good for around shower head? We've been using this previously. I'm not sure if it's enamel or what...

I'm not very familiar with Behr's coatings but I believe that is a latex enamel.

Anyone ever Redgarded over a backerboard primed with water based primer? I did a test piece. Primed with zinsser 123 and then RG. The grip is amazing. I asked RG and all they will tell me is they cannot warranty it. I wonder if anyone has heard of RG failures due to be applied over standard primer.

In a nutshell, Redgard won't warranty it because drywall is not listed in their instructions as a suitable substrate. Not even for interior dry applications. Read label directions!
