Question Is oil based wood sealer used when painting?

I was asked by my painter to get oil based wood sealer.

Is it common to use wood sealer when painting? I thought wood sealer was just for stain or lacquer.

If so, does anyone have a recommendation of what brand to get?

I'm assuming he means an oil base primer. Most oil base primers are technically a primer/sealer but only a few latex primers are also sealers. You would not use a sanding sealer under paint. I'm partial to SWP's A-100 primer [both oil and latex] but there are other brands that also have good exterior oil base primers.

Ok, and this is for interior use also. He wants it for the untreated unprimed wood. The job was quoted labor only so it's my responsibility to get the materials but because he does not speak very good english, I'm unsure he is asking for the correct thing.

If it's for interior work you don't want an exterior oil base primer as they dry too slow. An enamel undercoater would be ideal but most any interior oil base primer will do ok.

What is it you are having painted?

Most any interior oil base primer will work, I'd probably use a latex undercoater unless any areas gave me concern about tannin bleed [not an issue if you use oil]
