Garage Door Stain Help
I am going to restain my garage door, but I am not sure what the 'whitening' is that has happened to it. It was last stained by professionals approximately 4 years ago. The garage door faces Southwest and I am in Minnesota.
Any ideas what happened and how to prevent it again?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Looks like UV degredation due to sunlight. You usually see this on products that are not meant to be exterior. Did they apply a poly or varnish over the stain?

Thanks for the reply, thats kind of what I thought, especially because of the westerly sun and the eve above it preventing the top from being as bad as the bottom. I do not know if they used any poly or varnish, I wasn't too involved in the contractor selection and process last time.
So do you think I can just proceed with stripper, brightener, stain and then a poly or varnish to slow it down for next time?

Stained and varnished wood outside in the elements just doesn't last and requires constant maintenance. Apart from stripping it and using a marine finish (like what is used on boats) on an as needed basis, I don't know that there is any permanent solution.

Marq1-Sorry, I should have thought to add that. They are solid wood. I am not sure what kind though.
Xsleeper-Thanks, can you confirm that I should just use a stripper on it then restain? I have seen some information about UV blockers in some stain or finishes.

The more intense the sunlight is the more dark colors will fade. Back about 30 yrs ago I stained/poly'd quite a few garage doors but in the fla sun they always needed sanding and a fresh coat of spar poly within a yr or two. IF your door has poly you'd see some sheen on the upper portions of the door.
Your door looks more like a semi-transparent [possibly solid] stain was used. A solid stain would just require cleaning before applying a fresh coat. If you did that with a semi-transparent stain there would be a little difference in the look of the bottom portion versus the top. The better coatings will be more UV resistant than the cheaper ones.
If it was me, I'd go ahead and paint the door. Here in the southeast we see very few wood garage doors anymore. Steel doors need a LOT less maintenance.
