How do I calculate rails (including posts & spindles)?

This is a rather large deck and I'm trying to calculate the additional stain I'll need for all the rails. I'm reading in some places that it's linear ft but that doesn't seem adequate. Any insight?

Measure the surface area and turn it into Sq ft.

So a single 2x2 baluster that is 3 feet long would actually be 6" x 3 feet. 1.5 Sq ft of area per balluster. Then do the math.

Check your stain label and see what it says coverage is per gallon.
