Painting door hinges
How should I paint door hinges without removing them? My hinges were painted with the same paint as the doors and trim by the builder and I am now painting them. I removed the first bath doors and spray painted them off site and am thinking of painting with brush and roller where hung. I don't want trouble with bridging between hinge section. So as not to risk stripping the threads of the old door I want to avoid removing the hinges.

I dont think I have ever seen hinges that were painted along with the door, everything I have had or built had brass or nickle hardware.
I cant think of any way to do that but just brush them!

Just pop the hinge pins out to take the doors off. When you put the doors back on, you can touch up the paint with a brush.
Too bad they are already painted. But you are right to not want to run the screws in and out any more than you have to.

I think they may have originally been painted because the design called for nickel/chrome door handles on one side of some doors and brass on the other. For example, the hall side of a door to a bathroom is brass but the other side of the same handle is nickel/chrome.
A neighbor with the same house just had a very expensive complete remodel done and they painted over the hinges of his doors.

Yep. You earlier alerted me to the potential problem with those screws stripping, XSleeper. I think I know what I will do. For those I am not taking into the garage and spraying, I will pop the pins and paint the hinges. this will only take a few minutes a door. I will leave the doors off to allow the hinges to cure a bit, as I have to take a short trip. When I get back, I will rehang the doors and than paint the rest of the door and frame.

I agree there's no point in removing screws and risk stripping the wood. But just FYI, I stumbled across a clever product I'd never seen before called Screw-It-Again at my local Ace Hardware. A hinge screw in my wooden outdoor gate kept getting looser and looser and threatened to fall out. Screw-It-Again fixed it in about one minute. At about $1 each retail, they're overpriced for a piece of plastic, but the ease of the fix made it worth it for sure.

Why not just tape over the hinge pin area and then paint the rest of the hinge?
I have seen many hinges that had the hinge pin area painted and after a couple years they look like crap.
Note that it is a good idea to clean the area with varsol etc. before painting to get any oil/hinge dust off.

I agree painting the hinges doesn't look professional but I've seen many jobs where they did so, even worked a few as an employee where we painted the hinges 
Not much you can do now but continue to paint them. The less paint you get on the working portion the better.
