I have several new six panel steel doors to paint. Do steel doors need to be primed before painting with latex? If so, do I need to use a latex or oil based primer? I saw something once on tips for painting six panel doors but I don't remember it. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

joanb, Use a latex primer like KILZ II, KILZ Total One or Zinsser 123. Sand lightly with 220, wipe clean with a damp rag and paint with oil or latex....Mike

JoanB,

All the steel doors I've come in contact with were primed from the factory. You should be set to go, clean 'em off and dust them. As far as the technique, I could write a book on it. I'd have to send it to Mike for editing of course (he's that good!). Spraying the finish is best of course, but you can brush a quality alkyd enamel on with as good result, one trick I use is to add 10% by volume penetrol to the enamel. Helps the paint level out very nicely. Looks "poured on" if you don't use too many brush strokes.

Say Mike, maybe we oughta do a video eh? I could use some fishing time anyway.

best wishes
Sonnie
