How to paint the metal roof on my shed
Can anyone tell me how the roof should be prepped and what type of paint to use? My HOA doesn't allow bare metal roofs!

I assume this is galvanized metal ?? how old is it?
I'd clean the roof and apply a solvent based primer and your choice of exterior oil base enamel. Lighter colors won't fade as bad as darker ones.

The roof is new and galvanized metal. Is it necessary to use an oil base enamel? Unfortunately the color needs to be close to the color of the asphalt shingles on the house so it will have to be a dark color!

Latex paint adheres decent to new galvanized metal. The better quality latex house paints won't fade as quick as their cheaper counterpart. I'd use a paint with a sheen rather than flat. The only downside to using latex is it isn't rust inhibitive.
You still want to clean the roof in case there is any oily residue from the factory.
I just remembered that a lot of paint manufactures offer DTM paint [direct to metal] It's latex, still no rust inhibiting properties but that would likely be my first choice.

Back when exterior oil base was the norm we'd wipe down new galvanized gutters with vinegar prior to painting them. I always understood it was more for treating the galvanized so paint would adhere than to remove the oily film [but it would do that too]
I'm assuming he used either the 5 crimp or corrugated roof panels which are cheaper than the painted roof panels ..... and was unaware of the HOA requirement at that time.
