4 year old swingset restain - Water vs Oil Stain

The manufacturer says to use Superdeck's water-based stain in cedar color. The support person could not explain why water and not oil? Wouldn't oil last longer? Based on the pictures, do you think I could use Benjamin Moore's Arbercoat in a semi-transparent? I was going to power wash the set, light sanding, and then 2 coats.

A lot depends on where you live. In the south latex and waterborne stains tend to outlast oil base. Further north it probably doesn't matter. Oil base will penetrate and seal the wood better, latex usually doesn't fade as quick.

The greyed portion of the deck should either be washed with bleach or have a wood brightener applied.

Maybe, it all depends on how well it cleans up. Any areas of partial stain or darker wood will show thru semi-transparent stain. Won't be as bad with a 2nd coat.
