I have 5 new industrial-type, metal cabinets that I would like to paint over with a mural. What kind of surface prep do I need to do? (Primer? Sanding?) I want to use a latex paint for the mural since kids will be helping me and the clean-up will be easier.

The cabinet will be in a school so I want the paint job to be as durable as possible. We already have a supply of various-colored, indoor wall paint. If I prep the surface well enough, will this paint be OK to use for the mural? Because of our budget I would like to use as many existing materials possible.

from what I read in previous posts about painting metal, they suggest priming with an oil based primer, and then painting with latex top coat.
