I have a flagstone fireplace that my son and I built about 20 yrs ago and grouted with brown (UGH!) My taste has changed and, since I'm told I can't easily change the grout color I would like to paint the entire fireplace. What do I use to keep the grout from showing thru and the paint secure? Thanks in advance
Susan

Susan G, This what I would do. Get a small amount of masonry conditioner, I think a quart would do unless the fireplace goes way up, put it in a spray bottle and spray on and let dry. If there is any buildup from smoke or general funk on the stone use an oil primer. If you can wipe a small area of the stone with a rag with 409 or something on it and don't get anything yellow, brown dirt like stuff is OK, use a latex primer like Zinsser 123, KILZ II or KILZ Total One. Follow this with paint of your choice(latex will be fine) and enjoy...Mike
