Clawfoot tub refinishing questions...

How do you know if a tub needs refinishing?

We are looking to buy an antique clawfoot that is in great shape--no dings, etc. but the upper edges of the tub are rubbed in places. The rest of the tub is shiny still...

Also, can a very handy husband refinish a tub himself? I've seen the diy kits online, and wondered if doing them at home leaves them looking like it was a "diy" project.

Thanks for your advice.

The only situation that I would suggest a DIY tub kit is if it is seldom used such as a guest area. I'm sure someone has had good luck with these kits but I have never seen one done that held up to everyday use.......Mike
