Question painting acoustic ceiling tiles

I was curious to know if it is safe to paint acoustic ceiling tiles? The tiles are 12x12. They are in need of paint because they have become discolored from the last owner's years of smoking. Is it better to paint or to replace them. Thanks for any suggestions.

painting acustic ceilings

I would replace the tiles. Because if you paint them you will have an echo in the room. I have seen this before. The pattern in the ceiling( if you have one) will be glogged with paint which will cause the echo. But if you have a flat surface there should be no problem. But in any case I personally would replace the tiles. It's alot cheaper because you do not have to prime the tiles and repaint with two coats of a good quality paint. Good luck
