Question RePainting ceiling that has Gloss paint on it

We would like to repaint our living room ceiling which was clearly painted with a high gloss paint (not even semi-gloss). The ceiling is too large to consider liquid deglosser fumes in our closed-for-the-winter house.

What kind and grit of sandpaper do you recommend?
To test, I have started sanding the walls (also gloss) with 80 grit drywall sandpaper (the black kind) and it seems to leave a "speckled" look wherein some of the paint is sanded right down and some is still intact. Is this enough sanding to allow the new paint to bond or should I do more?

Thanks for the help.

There are primers on the market that adhere well to gloss surfaces and provide a good base for your finish coats......
All that sanding sounds like an unnecessary labour of love that I for one would rather do without..
However..Never use a coarse sandpaper as this will cause scratches that will be visible through your latex/emulsion.
