painting exterior brick

I would like to give my exterior brick a "whitewashed" effect. How would I go about doing this? I want to achieve a look of old, painted brick where you can tell it was once painted white but the brick is showing through on most of it.

find a paint that is appropriate for the exterior surface (the paint store should be able to help with this) and then ask them about thinning the paint to create a whitewashed effect (use water for latex paint, etc). i would experiment with a small area first to get the effect that you have in mind.
