Talking painting old furniture

Have just spent the whole weekend painting a spare bedroom. Have a late 1960's bedroom suite and would like to paint it. I think its like a formica or wood veneer and was wondering what process is invovled to paint it. Should I use an oil or latex primer and would like to use a latex paint on it. Should I varnish it after? Any ideas???????

shasta, If the furniture is all formica you could use latex or oil primer. Sand with 220 grit, wipe clean and prime with a top quality primer like Zinsser 123, KILZ II or KILZ Total One and I think Benjamin Moore has one called Fresh Start all of these latex. If there is any real wood I like an oil primer like KILZ Original....Latex paint can go over any of these primers. As for an oil varnish over the paint I see no need and it will only yellow with time.....Mike
