need painting advice

I've been working on striping and painting an old desk. Things were fine till I started painting.
I used kilz for the primer. When I started my finish I got a real rough texture. I am using Bear paint (premium I think) and a foam roller.I am trying to achieve a look that is smooth and shiny,
with gloss paint, like on a cherry dinning table.
Should I switch to a sprayer? I would like to stick with the roller, since the top is a large area, and I'm worried about over laps.
I would appreciate any tips on brushing, rolling and spraying, or other.

on bare wood use oil based primer then lightly sand between coats using an oil based undercoat .two coats of gloss will provide a shiney finish
