Unhappy Re-Painting kitchen cabinets

We want to refinish the wooden cabinets in our kitchen. They are currently painted in the style that was called antiquing where there are several colors painted over top each other. In our case it appears like a combination of blue, green and brown.
If it was only paint that we had to work with we would be ok but it looks like they were then coated with polyurethane or something similar.
What would be the best way to prep them for painting with an enamel paint?

sand

If they are real shiny and "slick" treat with a deglosser first. Sand with 220 grit paper. Prime with a good primer and sand again. Watch the drips and runs.

BobF, you forgot something.....

BobF failed to mention cleaning the cabinets wwith TSP to start and removing the sanding dust after you sand. This is an important step in not having your paint job look like garbage.
Those good old "moderators"..............

Thanks, JDX

Thanks, JDX. Sometimes we do omit the obvious in our replies.
