Question Painting Countertops

I have recently bought my first home. The counter top in our kitchen is an U-G-L-Y yellow. We plan on totally remodeling the kitchen in 3 years, so I don't want to put a lot of money into it. I have heard that you can paint the counter top. What kind of paint do you use and do you have to prime it first?
Thanks!

Use melamine...a good oil primer first is good, but melamine is also self-priming on two coats...buy a good brand from a paint store...wash the surface first with TSP, rinse and then lay on the paint with a high density foam roller.

sanding

If your surface is shiny, you might want to sand it off before
painting so the paint will absorb and not just flake off.
