Question Painting a metal door with vinyl window panes

I have a 15-pane window, metal front door. I painted it this morning and realized that all the paint on the dividers for the panes is peeling. I know that the door is metal, but think that the dividers may be vinyl. I used a latex gloss paint recommened by the paint store. Should I have primed the vinyl before painting....and how do I get the peeling paint off to start over?

True dividers, or inserts? The vinyl needs to be primed with acrylic such as Bullseye 1-2-3 or Moore's Fresh Start...a very fiddly task, but crucial. A gentle rub with a 3-M type of synthetic sanding abrasive might work. Get off what will come off. Clean the dust and grit away. Prime and repaint. Do not leave unpainted, they'll yellow in UV.
