Smile Painting baseboards

I am painting baseboards for the first time and don't know what to do to protect the carpet. I have a long straight trowel, could I use that?

Thank you for your help!

Masking tape 1 1/2 wide stuck down firmly to the carpet and tight in against the boards is best.

Thumbs up Cut board

I would use a painter cut board you can get them at any paint store. make shure when you use it to have a wet rag to keep it wiped clean.Ive never liked useing tape you always have seap through. I use nothing but a good steady hand but ive been doing it for years.maybe this will help you I really think a cut board is how you need to go.
