Stripe Painting

Folks,

I am trying to paint stripes on a bedroom wall for one of my children. I have read that I need to use Blue Painter's tape. What I don't know is: How soon do I peel the tape after painting the stripe?

Is there a special technique for getting the lines straight? I have used a chalk line, and allowed it to hang down, then snapped the line. I really would like to know if there is a better way? Or an easier way to get straight lines?

Thanks,

What i do is cut a strip of MDF 1/4 " thick the same width as the tape...Put some blue tack on the back.
put up your first strip of tape and then stick up the MDF strip next to it as a perfect guide for the next strip...and so on..
pull off the tape as soon as the scond coat is touch dry...Use thin coats of paint..
