Preperation-painting concrete

Read some posts on how to remove paint from concrete block, and how to add designs, but haven't seen anything on actual preperation of the block before painting. Would like to paint my garage concrete block. Should I use a primer first? (Will all the paint get sucked up by the block if I don't?)
The block consists of the standard 16 x 8, (2 cell) block.
Thanks

You’ll definitely want to prime it first, mainly because primer is cheaper than topcoat paint and the block will “suck-up” a ton of paint. Depending on how thirsty the block is, you could wet the area with water prior to priming....assuming you are using a latex paint.
