stain

I am about to paint a house using a solid color latex stain. The old paint is a semi-transparent oil stain. What kind of primer should I use or do I even need a primer?

Rio,
The semi-trans oil stain may repel anything you apply. I'll let the pros come in here and offer their advice.

Acrylics are a pretty good transition-type stain, however, to safeguard the success of the project, I'd recommend (at least here in Canada) an exterior grade oil primer first to avoid any bleeding, then stain. Others may have differing opinions and experiences on this but a stain job is the most likely to fail if not properly prepped.
