Painting wood and wood veneers

My daughter has a vanity table and bench that is very dark wood. It has some wood veneer, but also solid wood (the legs, for example). She wants to keep it and I need to do something to it!

Can I use TSP to clean it up, then sand it, and then apply some kind of primer to it? What should I use?

Then, what kind of paint should I use? Since the stain is dark, will I have to apply alot of coats, or is there something else I can do?

This needs to be as easy as possible for me.....it's the first time I have evert tried anything like this!!!

You're on the right track...

Sand
Tsp
Rinse and allow to dry
Prime with Zinsser 1-2-3/Insl-x Aqua Lock/Moore's Fresh Start (all water-based high-adhesion primers and will block out the old dark color)
Leave 24 hours
Paint (two thin coats are better than one thick one) with water-based paint (the shinier the finish, the more durable)
