prepping wood wall board for paint???

Ok, I just purchased a house that has wood paneling in every room. some of it is the type that has the slots in it to give the "wood" look to it and some is completley smooth with the "wallpaper" look to it. I have plans to paint over all of the paneling in the house. My question is..... Is there a way to get the textured look? sort of like on a sheetrock wall? is there something I can use to fill in the slots on the wood look paneling and possibly a roll on texture? I am trying to do this project myself and don't have the resources to spray on a texture.

I was hoping behind the paneling would be some type of drywall, but no luck, just a thin layer of plywood. I will be using this as a rental property, so I would like to keep it as economical as possible. I know can't have the best of both worlds, haha

any help would be greatly appreciated

Chris

For rental property you might want to reconsider the textured walls and perhaps go with a semi-gloss washable latex. This will be easier to maintain. There are, however, textured paints available.
