Painting a common wall

The common wall shared by living areas in an open floor plan tends to unify these areas. Thus, most keep the common wall one color if they go with complementary colors to separate the living areas. The common wall can easily become the most dramatic wall or the focal point of the shared living areas. I have however read forum posts where posters separated different paint colors on the common wall with wood moldings, columns, and room dividers.
