painting sheet metal

I need to paint some newly installed sheet metal ductwork. I believe its galvinized, but the surface of the metal is fairly shiny. Other than using a primer, do I need to specially prepare the surface to get the primer to adhere properly?

I would be pretty surprised if it wasn't galvanized. Should be no surface prep needed; however, you will need to use a primer specifically formulated for galvanized metal. Should say galvanized metal primer right on the can. Regular metal primer will not properly adhere and will eventually flake off.
