faux painting

I am painting one wall in my master bedroom a satin finish wine frost (pale lilac). I then painted a 3 inch vertical stripe down the wall every 24 inches with a clear glaze. I wanted the effect to be a "tone-on-tone look. The clear glaze didn't "register" a distinct look. What should I do? Should I try mixing the glaze with a little bit darker color and then try again? I really would like to create that "damasked" look. I saw it on a do-it-yourself show before.

You can achieve a very sophisticated look simply by purchasing two gallons of the same color. One of them should be flat paint and one of them should be semi-gloss. I suggest painting the entire room with the flat paint then using tape to tape off your stripes fill in with the semi-gloss. Its a great look and I think you will be happy with the contrast.
