Water Sealer on Counter

Water Sealer on Counter
We have a counter that we have repainted, what do we need to apply to this as a finish coat so when when water gets on this counter it does not bubble up the paint? Thanks for your help!

i would use a waterbased polyurethane for latex and a thinner based for oil paint.but as richd asked what is the counter made of and other questions, was it prepped and primed properly with the right materials for the counter surface and is the paint you used for that specific surface? im assumming you used latex or oil, so these questions no longer apply since the clear coat will be sticking to the paint and not the surface itself.
