beam leaks sap.

An exposed beam running across our living room has about a 3-4 inch section that continuously leaks sap. If we don't tend to it, scrape off the hardened drippings with turpentine, small beads of it fall into the carpet making a sticky mess. I'm stumped as to how to seal it off. One suggestion was to take a router and try to cut it out, then fill it in with automotive dent filler, Bondo. Who knows how deep one would have to cut. There has to be a better way. Any suggestions?
