Building shelves in a closet

I want to build a set of shelves in a closet that I do not use for clothes. The top shelf over the clothes bar is resting on 1 x 4's on each side and a 1 x 2 on the back. Should I do the same for the new shelves? Any advise anyone could give me? Thanks !

That will be the easiest way to do it plus it will look like the existing shelf. You'll want to locate where the studs are so you attach the support pieces to something solid. Look at the existing pieces and you may be able to see where the fasterners are placed. Other alternative would be the plastic-coated wire shelving. Check the local home center to see what they have; it can be bought in bulk and cut to size.
