Dan:
There is a kind of paneling called "Ceramalite" that is meant to go in wet areas like showers. Ordinary paneling will fall to bits in a shower.

Dan:
In some areas, Ceramalite is also called "Barker Board". Home Depot sells it in various patterns.

There are two areas of concern in a shower installation. 1:- Is the material water proof. 2:- How easy will the material clean.

Ceramic tile fills both of these categories. Although probably more expensive, it will last for years and is relatively easy to clean.

Your call.
