I am trying to refinish a birch door that does not match the oak woodwork. Stain in oak color did not penetrate, it is still a pale white color. Can I add stain to the polyurethene finish to deepen the color? I live too far out to go buy something else and have it done for the contractor by Monday? Suggestions?

Yes, you can add stain to poly.

Birch doesn't stain very well because there is not much grain showing.

Good luck.
