I've moved into a new home with unfinished redwood paneling. The paneling is in good shape but is rough and unfinished. the home is 35-40 years old. I would like to have a more finished look. Can I just sand and stain or do I need to clean the paneling first?

It sure wouldn't hurt if you cleaned it before making any alterations.

When you sand try to avoid going across the grain (it may gouge or leave nasty sanding tracks).

I would like to see you use a clean urethane covering rather than a stain. Redwood is so beautiful. Too beautiful to be any other color!
