Updating Barn Board Paneling

We have barn board paneling in the living room which is very dark and scratchy and very 70's looking. I was told that there is a method to maybe bleach or lighten the paneling instead of replacing it. Barn board is not like traditional paneling but more like rough boards.

If your paneling has a stain AND a finish (varnish or poly), it will be very difficult to lighten, since the finish would have to be stripped off.

I simply painted mine off-white and it looks great.

I have painted paneling in several homes. It lightens the room and updates your decor.
