I am cutting a finished item down to fit in a given space. This will be a crosscut. Which is the best way to preform the cut to best avoid splintering? Cut with the finished side down or the finished side up? Thanks for the help.

If you're cutting with a circular saw (hand electric), put the finished side down. If you're using a table saw, put the finished side up.
