Wainscot Kitchen Backsplash

I used wainscot to accent our kitchen recently, and used it behind my newly done countertop. The wainscot I used is white. What can I use to protect it from water? Someone recommended using varathane... but I had never tried that over white primer or paint before. Any suggestions would be great!!!

For maximum durability, I would paint it with a semi-gloss alkyd paint, and caulk the joints prior to painting.
