sheet rock over panel?

We just bought a house which has paneling in one of the rooms. We don't like it and would like to put sheet rock instead. Is it OK to put sheet rock over the panel or do we have to remove the panel before installing the sheet rock? (We don't want to paint the panel.)

Technically, the paneling should be over sheetrock. Have you checked? You solution may be at hand and already installed.

If the paneling is not over sheetrock, you might want to check with the building permit folks. Encasing the bare panel under sheetrock may violate the fire safety or building code.

If the paneling is glued and nailed to the sheetrock, its basicly junk anyway. The liquid nail rips big chunks off the sheetrock when you remove it.
