Polyurethane wood molding before putting on the wall?

Could I polyurethane wood molding before I put it on the wall around a window or along the floor? It seems like it would be easier to do.

As a professional painter I have always [when possible] stainned and varnished wood before installation. Preferrably all coats except final will be applied before installation. That way you can color putty nail heads [and possible bad mitre's] sand lightly apply finish coat and be done. If the finish coat of paint is applied to walls first you don't have to worry about getting paint on the woodwork, hopefully the walls will only need minor touch up.
