Mantel thing in front entrance

Hello, I have been replacing the baseboards and staining them and want replace this mantel thing and stain it to match. Take a look at

Any suggestions before I start? Anyone work on something like this before??

The ledges are typically glued and nailed down. A hammer prying it up will do the trick. If you've stained the rest of the woodwork, do this shelf the same way. Make sure you have the same overhang on all sides and if-when you butt it up to the wall and it doesn't sit flat; use a miter saw or table saw to cut the piece on an angle to meet the wall flush. Take into account when you cut the angle, it will shorten your overhang on the long end.
